A match consists of ten endings. It is usually played with 8 or 6 endings for fun. A (game) end(u) is when all players of both teams use two throws, a total of 16 rocks. If there is a tie when the 10 (game) end(u) ends, one more end is played as a tie break (extra) hand. If this overtime hand does not break the tie, the last play continues until the tie is broken. The winner is the team with the most points when all endings are finished.

In a match of any level, it is not appropriate for the losing team to leave the match before all endings are finished, even if there is no chance of winning. In the most competitive tournaments, the losing team is not allowed to leave before the 8 finishes have been completed. In competitive tournaments, the match ends when the losing team "runs out of pieces"; this is the name given to the losing team's pieces in the last end less than enough for a draw.

In international competitions, each side must complete all their shots in the 73 minutes given to them. In addition, each team is entitled to two 60-second timeouts after every 10 ends.

The curling stone or rock weighs 19.96 kg and has a carrying handle that allows it to spin when thrown.
